The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert – Review

This evening I have a very exciting spoiler-free review to share with you. At YALC 2017 I managed to grab an ARC of The Hazel Wood and I am so glad that I did. I absolutely loved this book and think anyone who enjoys dark fairy tales will love it as well!image1 (9)The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

  • UK ARC – 357 pages
  • Release date: 8th of February 2018

I didn’t know what to expect going into this book but it was WONDERFUL, it’s going straight on my favourites shelf. This is an absolutely perfect blend of dark fairy tales, harsh reality and unnerving writing.

Alice, the main character in this book, is one of my favourite main characters ever. I loved the way she viewed the world, not sugar-coating it or hiding the way she really felt, and I always love when characters swear. It just makes everything feel more real for me. The character development… I can’t say anything about it but I want to scream about it. Amazing.

The plot follows Alice as she has to go looking for her mum after she is stolen away. I think it’s best to go into this book knowing very little, I had no clue what to expect and was absolutely blown away. The way Albert combined dark and twisted fairy tale worlds, living stories and other realms with our world was just brilliant. I am going to be thinking about this book for years. I can’t wait to see what she writes next!

This isn’t the most thorough review, but just know that I loved this book and if you enjoy fairy tales then you will love it too. I’m trading my copy of the ARC, but can’t wait to buy the finished hardcover when it is released in 2018. I am so excited!!
